How will I know when I am Postmenopausal (when does the menopause finish)?
A woman is considered to be in the postmenopause phase when she has not had a period for one entire year, or two years just to be on the safe side.
The standard way to check if you have entered into the menopause is by having your doctor examine your blood, to test for the follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), which is a hormone that is secreted from the pituitary gland. FSH will secrete more, as our ovaries become gradually less active in the menopause.
The only weakness about this test is that our FSH levels will be in a constant flux in perimenopause, so it is not the most accurate way to know if you are officially in the menopause.
The only way to really know is if you have not had a period for one entire year.
Technically, the menopause finishes at this point, however, oestrogen and progesterone hormones will still be rebalancing themselves, and still very much fluctuating and falling, which means that some symptoms may continue to be present in postmenopause.
If your symptoms still have not eased off after a few years in postmenopause, please make sure you are consulting with your doctor.
