Whilst wearing make-up isn’t for all (let’s be honest, we’re all fabulous without it!), for some, it can be a much-needed confidence boost.

Here are our top tips for menopause-managing make-up that will leave you looking and feeling fabulous all day long.
If the red in your cheeks is more raging than rosy, it can be tempting to pack on a thick foundation or concealer in an effort to hide it. However, this can often be counter-productive; not only can this result in the dreaded cake face, but the more makeup you wear the harder it can be to repair it. Instead, try applying products in thin layers and opting for long-wearing formulas. Creamy stick foundations can be blended out with fingers on the go and are an easy way of quickly covering any redness that might be peeking through.
A yellow-toned base helps to neutralise any redness. If you find there are sections of your face that have a permanent high colouring that you dislike, green colour corrector can be a godsend, but use sparingly to avoid a noticeable green tinge.
Another tip that can help with the managing of red flushes is to avoid blush, as this will exacerbate the appearance of any redness. If you can’t go without a quick sweep of colour in the morning, stick to sheer peach tones, which are universally flattering and easy to apply.
Cheating a Good Night's Sleep
Flushes can be a barrier to a good night’s sleep, leaving you feeling and looking drained. If you find your complexion needs a little pick-me-up to fake a good night’s sleep, a pink-toned light-reflecting concealer can do wonders for brightening any blue tones under your eyes and a light BB cream can help even out the complexion and give you a glow with skincare benefits to boot. If redness isn’t an issue for you, a dab of cream blush blended out on the cheeks cheats a youthful glow.
If you don’t want anything with colour but just want your skin to appear healthy and fresh, a moisturiser with subtle rosy tones can help to revive your skin and have an illuminating effect.
Try to avoid using powders and stick to liquids and creams: powder and water don’t mix and can leave you looking patchy. Blotting papers are a great and inexpensive way of taking down any unwanted shine and can be easily stored in a purse or pocket for when you're out and about.
If you find your mascara leaves you looking like a member of Kiss, it’s worth investing in a good waterproof formula that doesn’t budge. With the science behind cosmetics improving drastically year after year and new innovative formulas hitting the market daily, there’s a huge variety of choices for every budget, which boast great staying power and shade options (perfect for those inevitable rainy days when your umbrella gets blown inside out as well!).
One beauty weapon in our arsenal that we couldn’t be without in the fight against hot flushes is a cooling mist, which boasts multiple benefits, including an instant cooling effect, soothing any irritation and redness, refreshing tired looking skin and adding and maintaining hydration. On top of this, you can also spray it over make-up for a quick refresh, which makes it a great little multi-tasker.
It’s the stuff of our teenage nightmares but for some women, skin can get oilier during the menopause and breakouts can be common. Spot treat as needed but avoid overly harsh, drying formulas if possible, as skin can be more sensitive due to a drop in oestrogen levels.
To conceal spots, we suggest using a long-wearing opaque concealer that matches your skin tone as closely as possible, and a fine pointed brush to apply. Simply dot the concealer on where needed and lightly tap with your finger to blend it seamlessly into the rest of your skin. Breakout, be banished!
Saying Bye to the Dry
As our oestrogen levels diminish, our skin stops producing as much collagen, which can result in dry, itchy skin with a loss of elasticity. On top of this, we produce less hyaluronic acid, resulting in our bodies finding it harder to retain moisture. To combat this, look for skin care with hyaluronic acid listed in the ingredients and keep those moisture levels up with a rich moisturiser and targeted skincare regime. You’ll soon be glowing like the goddess you are!
